Launch
of Electric Security Fence Code of Practice
A new code of practice
for Electric Security Fences was launched on 11 May
2004 at IFSEC as a result of collaboration between
the Fencing Contractors Association, the Electric
Security Fencing Federation and the British Security
Industry Association.
The ‘Electric
Security Fences – Design, Installation and Maintenance’
Code of Practice (PAS 47) has been produced over a
three year period in consultation with manufacturers,
installers and government departments.
FCA Chief Executive
Wendy Baker says: ‘PAS 47 was sponsored by the
FCA whose members were concerned by the various and
often conflicting codes of practice in operation.
During the last 10 years there have been an increasing
number of electric security fence installations in
the UK and the safety of system installers and end-users
has been a concern.’
Newly elected FCA
Chair and BSIA member company representative, Steve
Buckley, of Gallagher Security Europe, comments: ‘The
new code of practice addresses the specification and
quality of manufactured products. It also provides
client guidance in their selection of installation
companies that, by their compliance with this standard,
have the ability to design, install and maintain an
electric security fence system. Electric fence installer
competencies and training requirements included in
this standard will, we are sure, provide greater assurance
to customers – and a safer working environment
for the installation team.’
‘Standards
are the key to guaranteed service and delivery of
products within our industry,’ says Martin Williams,
Chairman of the BSIA Physical Security Section. ‘They
are necessary to provide clarity and peace of mind
for both end-users and security companies. PAS 47
will be instrumental in providing safe, best practice
electric fence installations.’
